Been drinking here for years, and digging their new spot (a stones throw away from the frat bar known as McSorelys). Classing up 7th st (but really, I do dig a simple light beer as well.) The food is vegan, but dont let it dissuade you. The Welsh Rarebit is damn tasty. Zucchini fries are good, but for the price Id rather Bubble and Squeek. The waiter was helpful, courteous, and comped a beer after realizing he forgot my order. OH!!! Theyre testing a new popcorn recipe which (note to the owners) must go on the menu. Or offered for free. For real, salty snacks=I will order more beer. To which- $4 small pours should be staple everywhere.

New location, new review. Definitely a great place for a beer nerd to checkout. They always have something interesting on tap, and staff are helpful in providing some additional beer info/details. Given the beer is always rotating and often from far off lands, its always a fun experience that I like to keep checking out when I visit NYC.

If you love craft beer, a chill vibe, AND the east village, then youll love Proletariat! Its a very spacious place that provides a beer menu on the wall right when you walk in.They have seating but no wait staff so youll have to order your drinks at the bar. I loved the original spot, the new spot is beautiful. Unique beers, the food is pretty good too, but some of the bartenders are awful. Barely looks up from his phone, seems annoyed that we came in. We asked to taste a single beer, and he was very annoyed and said no other tastes. We’ve had this bartender multiple times and he makes it extremely unwelcome. Won’t come back when he’s there

Great new vegan food option! Proletariat’s new space is nice with a wall between the bar and the tables to help keep the noise down. The rarebit was reeeaaallly yummy, so cheesy! Food was good overall and we will definitely be back to try the other options on the menu. Our only issues were that it was weirdly super cold inside and service was fairly slow for how few people were there when we were.

Hands down the best beer bar Ive ever been to. The bartenders really know their beer. Since the taps change so regularly, Ive been able to try new breweries and expand my horizons on the types of beers I enjoy. I usually ask the bartender to pick something for me based on my taste and theyve never chosen a beer I didnt like. The music is also always incredible. It can get packed on a weekend night so go during the week or early on a weekend.

They definitely have an enlightened selection. A couple of things bothered me, however. They have an unusual selection but do not allow you to sample before purchasing. I have been to a couple of breweries that charge $1 or $2 for a sample and I think this is fine. Not allowing samples at all is asinine. They might argue that they will sell you a 4oz pour. Thats nice but a 4oz pour here is still more than a 12oz beer outside of NYC. Also, the snobbery is strong at this place. $20 credit card minimum is a bit silly too even though you might reach that with one beer. Seems like they have a negative attitude towards customers.Probably wont be back for the above reasons. They deserve some credit for putting together a great selection and prioritizing the beer. There are just too many great beer bars in NYC these days to spend time in one where I dont feel welcome.

This is the second best bar Ive encountered in terms of rare beer selection. Rare, new, and unusual beer, available bottled and on tap. Some will resonate familiar, but most are uncommon brews. The menu changes daily. An extremely dim lit small, narrow space that gets packed fast, youll want to come early. Tattoo illustrations face the bar. Their bartender is super knowledgeable and will provide great recommendations. You are also able to sample brews beforehand. All their wonderful beer comes with a price, however, but its certainly worth it.

Cozy little craft beer spot. Its becoming thankfully easier to find bars with decent craft beer menus in New York. Proletariat doesnt have a good list, it has a great one. Youll find some unique beer here you wont find anywhere else. There was a porter filtered through oysters. My favorite was the Flemish red ale which had a good hop profile but string malt as well. The bar tenders are happy to explain the beer and though its a little weird hey change for tastes, the tasting pour is healthy and is a nice option if you dont know if youll like something. There are also half glasses as well. The wine glasses are a by odd, but they do allow you to smell more of the beer which is good. Great place to try some unique beer or wait for a reservation nearby.

As of late 2022, located at a new address a few blocks from their original location. The new space is significantly larger than the old one, but theyve manage to maintain the cozy vibe. Plenty of seats in the bar area plus a number of small tables. 20 rotating beers on draft, occasional bottle pours, plus a large well-curated selection of cans and bottles. They also have a kitchen cooking up plant-based versions of familiar bar food items.

Beer bar, so dont go in looking for too much else. The beer selection is definitely top tier for NYC. I’d asked if they had any West Coast IPAs in can and the bartender legit laughed at me and said that style doesn’t exist on the East Coast. I’m sorry, a bunch of local breweries (Grimm, Evil Twin, KCBC, etc) had West Coast styles in the past few months. He insisted I had no idea what I was talking about and that he had more certifications in beer than I do. While this place may have a decent selection, they have an absolute embarrassment working behind the bar.

Very good beer, but they have a new policy where you cannot try a taste of a beer. You must “commit” to at least a small pour sight unseen. This goes against the spirit of what a beer bar should be , as well as being ill-considered given the esoteric nature of the beers on offer.I am at the bullseye of the target market for this place, but cannot reccomend them due to this new policy.

This is a great chill bar with cheep beer and I mean beer, dont be going here for wine or mixed drinks. Theres nothing like the feeling of a quaint hole in the wall place with space for maybe thirty to fifty people. If you just want to drink with friends and not bust the bank hit this place, just bring some snacks they dont provide. Also OK not their fault that Webster Hall tweekers were there last night and were not exactly classing up the joint.

Proletariat is a great spot in East Village for a low key night out. Its a classy and cozy beer lounge that changes its taps daily so every time you visit, youll be in a treat to try something new that they have to offer. You wont find the typical domestic fare here, instead plenty of craft beers. I tried the Allagash Red Howes, a cranberry flavored stout, and Bells Kalamazoo IPA in my recent visits. The bartenders are knowledge and can make great recommendations if youre unsure of what to drink after you pull up a stool. This bar is from the same genius minds that put together Death + Company.

Ju
Review №46

Proletariat is probably the best beer bar in the city from a curation standpoint. Most other beer bars--especially in Manhattan--try to focus on quantity more than anything else. But when youre basically getting the same stuff at all of these different places with little variation, who cares? Thats why Proletariat selects its 12 draft beers and small list of bottles so carefully, rotates them frequently, and takes care of them so well (right glass, clean taps, etc) with an extremely knowledgeable staff to match. Theres always something worth trying (including half pours), which easily justifies cramming into this long, dark space that packs out with a diverse crowd. My advice is to get here early so you can either carve out space at the bar, or grab the lone table in the front. Either way, if you want to enjoy craft beer in NYC it doesnt get much better than this.

I liked this place, it wasn’t insanely crowded when we came in on a Saturday night which was a plus. The variety of artsy beers was fun and I went with a group and we all ordered different ones and were able to try each other’s. Damn some of them were really expensive though even for NYC standards! Had been to the previous location next door many many times, and it was truly one of my favorite bars in NYC.The new location loses almost all of the weird charm that made this bar so interesting, and replaces it with a generic narrow bar with some cool pictures on the wall. All that being said, the best part was always the beer. So me and some friends go sit at a table in the back and 2 out of 4 of us order a beer to start. The bartender immediately starts acting icy and strange. About three minutes after bringing us our beers, he asks us if someone else can sit with us because “we’re not drinking.”The whole experience was some weird passive aggressive masterclass in bad service. I guess this was probably just a case of a bad bartender, but, man, this place has lost about everything that made it unique before and added some awful service on top of it. Lots of better bars in the immediate area. That being said - the beer I drank was pretty good, and I’ve always liked their selection in the past. So two stars for that!

He seems to know a lot of the brewers personally and the history of the beer styles which is rare for an east coast beer bar bartender. The new spot is much better looking than the older space which the owners painfully neglected for years. You could tell the staff cared more than whoever signed off on upgrades.I don’t understand the vegan food. It’s ok enough and is so greasy it’ll give you the squirts the next day. I’ve lead a vegetarian lifestyle for quite a while, dabbling in veganism. I like to make fun of Raymond to remind him yeast is very much alive and beer isn’t vegan at all.All in all, major upgrade from the closet sized space to a spot you can stretch your wings a little at, though it’s farther from my house. A dive bar that has some craft brews for any and everyone to enjoy. It’s a very long, narrow, and dimly lit place. The staff are friendly, cheerful, and will make sure you get a glass in your hands. We came here for after dinner drinks and it was a very solid time.I don’t think there is much more to say then that. If you were denied at Please Don’t Tell, come here instead.

This is the best beer bar in the city, straight up. If you really enjoy good beer and price is not the object of your evening, Proletariat is where you should be. I should add that the staff is always very knowledgeable and helpful.

Great bar for beer nerds. The place is tiny but they have a couple of standing tables in addition to the long bar. The bartender is friendly and ready to point out the new, it beers. Definitely recommended if you want to take some time to enjoy delicious craft beers. Great for small groups.

I’ve been coming to Proletariat from time to time for like 4 years, and tonight after bringing 6 friends and having two rounds we were asked to either leave or have another drink. Two friends hadn’t finished their drinks at that point, and we were all shocked. As nice as their beer selection and their decor is, they should not treat customers, returning or not, like that

One of the biggest names in Manhattans craft beer scene. Proletariat is a tiny bar in the village with a big appetite for incredible beers. The staff are friendly and incredibly knowledgeable. Their taplist is usually one of the best in the neighborhood, but expect to pay a premium for such tasty and limited brews. I personally am not a fan of how small it is. Some would say it creates a sense of intimacy, but its hard to say when some kick ass rock & roll is blaring through their sound system. That being said, Id never shy away from a visit to the Proletariat.

A nice place for the more adventurous beer drinkers. Slightly off the beaten path, this small bar serves a rapidly changing set of draft beers. In fact, the brews on offer change so often that they dont bother to show or use any menus. The guy behind the bar helps you find a drink to match your taste even if you are not familiar with specific types of beers. Attentive service but not too much.

This bar serves up very unique and strong beers. The bar tenders know the taste and can very accurately describe the beer. If you are unsure what to pick just ask them. The bar it self is very small. It is very narrow and has one set of bar stools. You can basically sit on the stool and maybe a few people can be around you.The bartop is sheets of copper! It looks very cool. Ask the bar tender for the history of the bar from the dents and marks of the bar top :).

Better than average tap list but a bit more $ than other craft beer bars and smaller sizes (8oz vs 9 or 10 for wild ales). Happy hour is a bit restrictive.

Always a fantastic beer selection with stuff you often wont find anywhere else in the city. Bartenders are always very helpful and know their beers as well as anyone. Its VERY small with maybe only 12-15 seats at the bar and two small tables up front. Also note that while they do take cards, they have a $20 minimum.
