I came by recently on a Monday night. It was pretty full, even for a slow night, but we did manage to get a table without a reservation. (I would definitely make one if youre planning to visit at a busier time!)What a gem of a spot — no cover, and the band was awesome. Cocktails were delicious and reasonably priced, service was attentive and friendly. They are cash only — make sure you come prepared so you can just kick back and enjoy the great music and vibes. :)

My husband and I used to love coming here every second Thursday night for Terry Waldo and his band. We must have been religiously going for 2 1/2 years. There was always one good and one terrible bouncer, now it seems there is only the bad one left. He is nasty, has a bad attitude, is always on his phone and is just outright rude. We used to make reservations, because my husband can no longer stand in line. Now they removed that option, we tried to contact them via email, phone, IG message - nothing. Nobody cares to answer anything, it’s really so sad. The only good waiter - who we really loved - Antonio - was either let go or left involuntarily - he was the heart of the place and management is not nice and has failed to find a way to replace him with equally good staff. The new waitress is not friendly, and the place has lost all its special appeal. We will most likely not be back.

Simply wonderful! No cover, no drink minimum- just a bit of a line and cash only. This is such an intimate and cozy venue, and the staff is so kind and accommodating. If you go here, just try to be respectful and give your attention to the artists while theyre playing.Better for small groups of 2-3 as seating is limited, perfect spot for a date night.

The music was very nice, the musicians are very skilled (but the ones weve seen dont really interact with the audience)! The bar is cash only but they have an ATM downstairs if needed. The service was okay but not great, the waitress forgot to take our order (we had to ask the tenant) and put a 20% tip on our bill at the end as if it were compulsory. When I said I would give a 15% tip because the service was just okay (and also because we stayed only 45min), the waitress pretended not to understand, didnt ask what she could improve and was not very professionnal. There is no entry fee but you need to consume for at least $15 per person. I found it fair at the beginning but I realized then that it implied that the musicians are not payed by the bar, so you better provide for big tips to support the band (I think after all I would prefer an entry fee that would pay the band).Last, the wine was very good but the cocktails are very very small for their high prices. In short, I would recommend this place only for the music and the seats that are quite cosy and offer good visibility.

Arthur’s Tavern is hands down a hidden gem in the heart of Midtown! This contemporary jazz bar offers a unique and lively atmosphere that is perfect for a romantic date night. While its a cash-only establishment, the experience you get is absolutely worth it.One of the standout features of Arthur’s Tavern is their impressive cocktail menu. I highly recommend trying their French 75, a delightful mix of Empress 1908 Gin, fresh lemon juice, simple syrup, and topped with Prosecco. Its a refreshing and classy choice for those who enjoy a bit of effervescence in their drink. And lets not forget about the Sweet Georgia mule, made with Grey Goose White Peach and Rosemary Vodka, lime juice, simple syrup, and a zing of ginger beer. This cocktail is a perfect blend of sweet and tangy flavors that will surely tantalize your taste buds. So, if youre looking for a night of great music, delicious cocktails, and a cozy ambiance, Arthur’s Tavern is definitely the place to be! Its a spot where you can unwind, enjoy some fantastic drinks, and create unforgettable memories with your loved ones.

BEWARE OF THIS PLACE! We were there last night. First, the manager publicly talked about drugs on stage and promoted them. Second, the waitress took $50 from my friend for wine that costs $16 and claimed she took $20, thus shorting him by $34 that he never got back. She also didnt bring me the drink I paid for. Disgusting! We also see in other reviews that the waitress behaves abnormally and steals!

Great place to hear live music. No DJ nor NYU student streaming a playlist. This is live music at its best. Arthur’s Tavern does not charge a cover. Seating is first come, first serve. The venue is small but that’s the allure; you’re right next to the stage no matter where you sit. The drinks are good and they have a strong selection. The food options are very limited if there is any food available (just a cheese board when I went). But I was not here for the drinks or food. I came here for the music and by God it was damn good!

It’s advisable to make a reservation if you want to make sure you’ll find a seat. Besides, you might not have to stay in line outside, which will save you a precious time.Nice venue to enjoy live music. You can feel the echoes of the forties and fifties around you while drinking, let’s say, a Brooklyn Lager and allowing yourself to be carried away by the enchantment of a kind of music that makes you travel through that time lost in the haze of black and white movies.

One of my favorite venues in the city. Ive seen a variety of sets from ragtime to swing to jazz to soul, and every single one has been great. No cover, $15/person minimum at tables which is completely reasonable. Cash only, so come prepared or use the ATM in the basement (and bring some extra along to tip the band - no cover means they rely on tips). Really awesome staff - nice folks (with some hidden singing talents, too!). Drinks are pretty good, and the food is great (get the pretzel bites). I love the atmosphere and always have a great time listening to amazing music in a fun and intimate venue.

Old-school jazz is what I was looking for and what I found here.Welcoming people, sincere alchemy between musicians, well lit stage, not too noisy, this was great.Minus 1 star for the waitress who is not for the faint-hearted. Grab onto your almost-empty glass because it WILL be taken away to make you order another one, because of the mandatory 2 drinks per person per set. Not surprised because there are very clear signs about it, this is a business so it is understandable. Smoothing the bluntness would be appreciated.Would still recommend it 100% though!

Decided to check out Arthur’s Tavern after discovering Blue Note was price of ticket plus $20 minimum. It did not disappoint! Grove Street Stompers were performing as they do every Monday, and they were so talented and fun. It felt like I was transported to New Orleans, early 1900s!I ordered a sour whiskey - it was small, but tasted great. Tables are a minimum of $15 per person, and I’m unsure about minimum for bar seating. By the time the band started playing, the bar was almost full.I’m docking a star is because of unhygienic food handling. I saw what appeared to be the manager stick her bare, unwashed hands into the olive jar that was being used for drinks, to snack on some olives. Also, the bartender used his bare hands to put ice into the drink glasses and handed out drinks by touching the rims. Otherwise, this place rocks!

Overall, it was a good experience for a jazz performance. The musicians were very professional and the performances were excellent. However, there were a few things I wasn’t happy about.First, the host, who played the saxophone, made jokes about the piano players name, claiming it was too difficult to pronounce. Honestly, I didn’t think it was that hard; the name was either Lou or Liu. He made this joke twice: once at the beginning and again at the end of the session. At first, I didn’t think much of it, but when he repeated it at the end, saying something like, I still don’t know his name, even though we’ve been playing together haha I found it unprofessional and a bit ignorant, especially when the pianist was, IMO, the best performer of the night.Another issue was with the bartender. Perhaps they thought we were tourists because they automatically added a 20% gratuity and included it in the total on the check. I’m not sure if this is their standard practice for all customers or if it was because they assumed we were tourists (even though I live in NYC), but either way, it wasn’t a pleasant surprise, especially since we were seated at the bar, not at a table.

Bartender agreed immediately and took the phone. However she put it on an open table top without any monitoring w/ tons of people pass by. My friend’s phone and all credit cards got stolen. She didn’t tell us immediately until 10 minutes later. When police came, the manager can’t even get the camera to work. Arthurs Tavern in Greenwich Village exceeded my expectations and provided a fantastic jazz bar experience. After a fortuitous stumble, my partner and I discovered this hidden gem when the neighboring restaurant had a long wait. The live jazz band welcomed us with their captivating music as we ordered drinks from the inviting counter bar, which I consider to be the best seats in the house. The bartender, Justin, showcased his skills by crafting impeccable drinks and offering valuable recommendations for nearby eateries. Kudos to Justin for his excellent service! The ambiance was truly delightful, with the combination of live jazz, dark wood panel walls, photographs of jazz legends adorning exposed brick walls, and the gentle spotlight illuminating the space. I am eager to return for another jazzy date night in Greenwich Village.

Only one person was serving tables, so very slow service, and even going up to the bar there was an over 10 min wait. Got the smoking revolver, which was awesome; the “smoke topper” was a nifty little wooden hat on my rocks glass that arrived fully smoldering and instantly made me feel like I was out in the woods around a campfire; it also made for a delicious drink :). I didn’t have any food so I can’t speak to that. Couple of excellent jazz bands played. I think you’re supposed to order $15 of food or drinks per person per set. Music was great and the drinks / service were fine. That said, the bartender made a point to come over and criticize us for tipping 10%, which felt inappropriate. Did I do the math wrong on accident and tip less than intended? Yes. Was the bartender out of line in criticizing us for it? Also yes. If 20% is required, include it in the cost of the drinks instead of criticizing customers for tipping less. Many places incorporate tips into the cost of the food and don’t accept tips; no other place doesn’t require a 20% tip and then embarrasses customers into paying more. Especially because we DID tip 20% of the bill technically - but the other half went to the musicians’ tip jar. All in, it was a good experience minus the weird interaction with the bartender at the end of the night.

I went to this jazz bar even though they told me not to go and they were right. I would give 5 out of 100 and that 5 would be because of its location and proximity to all other nice bars. First of all, I dont think the owner is ever there because if he was, he would never employ the bartender or the waitress. When the bar was almost empty, they said the tables are reserved and I am sure they werent. It took them forever to bring a beer and they kept asking me if I want to drink every 5 minutes, I said I am still drinking. When she brought the beer, she put the bottle so hard, it was like wild west. She said literally: man, this is bar, you need to drink. It was like a joke. I think they are racists, too because she was just fine with serving blonde people and smiling at them. What a great find till we had an encounter with one of the nasty servers. The bartender here is amazing, she has served us several times in the past , she is great, happy, great drinks, peppy. However, one of the servers was a true bully to our daughter. She bullied her, bashed her verbally and shamed her to the point of tears: all over a table that we were willing to pay for, order drinks and tip well, a true misunderstanding on a busy Friday night. We will unfortunately never patron this great place again due to this individuals attitude and pure rudeness. Such a jewel of a bar, such a shame they employee someone so nasty and rude!!! Shame on her!

This is a really wonderful, small, cash only, bar. There was a jazz band playing at a reasonable volume, something too rare find these days. Nothing special about the drinks, buy the atmosphere is on point.

Great live jazz and other tunes. Crazy small so if you dont get a table can be pretty cramped. Often (always?) a two drink minimum although Im not sure how they actually enforce that..

So. Freakin. Awesome... On our trip to NYC, we went twice to this place. Its cash only, theres no food... but the music was absolutely amazing. We had the pleasure of seeing Yuri Yamamoto Jazz Trio on our first night and then House Rockin Blues on our second. Both were awesome in their own ways... it doesnt really feel like we went twice to the same place, but more like we went to two different places. The place is as you see it... and Im thankful for that

WOWThis is definitely the place to have some drinks in NYC. This performer will make you move.Great live music, Jazz but not limited to it - and it’s for free. Had a great time there and I would come back without a thought.Thank you Bobby Harden, E. J. Sharpe, Stew Cutler & friends - that was amazing performance.

Extremely disappointing. Discriminated against me - accused me of being gay (not gay but support all). Unfortunate because I liked the music but the bouncer and bartender were drunk and way out of line with a guy just standing at a bar. Would never never recommend it to anyone else in the area.

A Manhattan must-see! Live jazz in a VERY cozy space. Front of house manager was determined to get us comfortable and taken care of. Had to play musical chairs a bit- but eventually had stage-front view and made the experience so memorable. Would avoid sitting in the back in a chair. Impossible to see anything but the back of someone’s head.

Drinks are way overpriced for what is essentially a dive bar, but a great, classic, NY pub. If youre a fun, upbeat, regular person who enjoys the old NY feel, this place is for you especially on free jazz nights (Monday). If youre a high maintenance Manhattanite who expects first class service and a staff that serves coming from a place of awe and fear wherever you go, youre going to be disappointed!!! Re-opened and under new ownership, Arthur’s Tavern is better than ever!Ya might want to complain that the dive bar formerly known as Arthur’s Tavern is gone (you miss the dusty decorations, hitting your head when you sat down along the wall, going into the creepy leaky bathroom…)… but once you go, you’ll be incredibly surprised that the spruced up jazz room now known as Arthur’s Tavern is alive, comfortable, clean and friendly(!!) and probably closer to the 1937 version of the original Arthur’s Tavern!!The regular Sunday night band (every Sunday since the 1980’s) The Creole Cookin’ Jazz band is back (7p-10p)!The Monday night band, The Grove Street Stompers (playing every Monday since the ‘60-‘70’s!) are also back, 7p-10p!I spent a lot of time in the pre-pandemic Arthur’s (my trombone-playing dad-in-law has played in the Sunday night band since the 80’s!) and being there last night (Sunday 5/1/22) for the first time since the re-opening (April 29, 2022) I can tell you, there’s nothing I miss of the old Arthur’s.The new owners did a magnificent job of renovation/restoration. If you do miss the old Arthur’s, check out the photos, on the new walls, of the old dive.Dixieland Trad Jazz is here!

Let me unravel the tale of our recent adventure at Arthur’s tavern. We had our reservation locked in for a smooth jazz night, or so we thought. Little did we know, Arthur’s tavern had a different agenda. We found ourselves in an unplanned double date at a shared table. Not the laid-back evening we had envisioned. Now, onto the bouncer – a true maestro in the art of condescension. His act? Treating my Native American friend like she was auditioning for a sitcom, making her feel conspicuously singled out. Classy move, Arthur’s tavern, turning a night out into an unplanned comedy show with an uncomfortable twist. We made a swift exit, deciding Arthur’s tavern wasnt our vibe. If youre into surprise seating, sassy bouncers, and a side of awkward, consider this your entertainment hub. For those who prefer a jazz night without the unexpected plot twists and uncomfortable vibes, maybe steer clear of this offbeat comedy – its a performance with more surprises than a jazz riff.

I went there with friends on Saturday. Music was good, however I found the women working there extremely rude. My friends and I were in line waiting to order, and I asked for water and she waved her hands at me aggressively said “No order alcohol or get out.” Very rude, and unprofessional. Is it against the law to ask for water at a bar, and I am sober as well, is that how your establishment treats people who don’t drink alcohol?

Bittersweet experience. Great music and atmosphere, however the blonde woman waitress was extremely rude to us. She was forcing us to pay the bill, however we didn’t want to leave yet, she took our drink without finishing because we hadn’t paid yet. After insisting many times we finally paid, however she accused us of not having paid and shouted at us. We tried to speak with the manager, as the situation was unacceptable, bit it was impossible. At the end, one of the other waiters apologised to us cause he realised we had paid, however she turned her back to us and disappeared without saying anything. We would have stayed for more drinks but obviously we left.

This jazz bars bouncer needs a crash course in customer relations, pronto. Our encounter at the entrance was less about gaining entry and more about enduring an uninviting lecture. Despite our confirmed reservation, the bouncers demeanor couldve curdled milk. His lack of courtesy and grace made us question if customer service was a foreign concept at this establishment. It was clear he needed a refresher on welcoming guests, as his approach was anything but hospitable. Instead of a warm greeting, we were met with a disdainful tone that could have used a serious tune-up. The bouncers icy demeanor left us feeling like wed mistakenly wandered into a restricted zone, not a place where patrons should be made to feel unwelcome. This isnt just about a single unpleasant encounter; its about a fundamental lack of understanding in how to treat paying customers. If this jazz bar hopes to create an enjoyable atmosphere, its high time they invest in some serious training for their bouncers on how to talk to and welcome guests. Until then, expect a chilly reception thats colder than the notes in a Miles Davis ballad.
